Development of v Packaging Concepts

The assessment of packaging concepts should always take into consideration the whole lifecycle of the package: 1) Production of the packaging material 2) Converting 3) End of life

Machines are suitable to process alternative packaging materials. Nevertheless, the substitution should always be assessed in a holistic way. Product protection should be the main focus. For long-term in packaging technology, will provide added value to the industry by supporting the development of sustainable packages which offer maximum protection with a minimum footprint.

Fiber-based materials

Fiber-based materials support industry by increasing the recyclability of their packaging concepts and reducing the consumption of plastic film to produce packages. Materials can be separated into their respective parts by the end user. Either the paper carrier material or the complete paper composite can be put into the dedicated recycling loop (subject to country-specific legislation & infrastructure). Even if the material is disposed of in the normal packaging waste rather than in the paper recycling bin, it can be detected in today's modern recycling centers, where it is removed and fed into the paper recycling loop.

Mono materials based on fossil feedstock

Packaging materials which mostly consist of mono materials, supporting the recyclability of the packs. These can then be simply fed back into the dedicated closed-loop system. Due to the available application for recycled material, from today's perspective, the prime candidates are PET (Polyethylene terephthalate), PE (Polyethylene), PP (Polypropylene) and PO (Polyolefins) = mix of PP and PE.

When using mono materials for packing food products, it is important to take into account the change in barrier properties compared with composite materials, which may have been used previously, as well as the effects of this on the packed product. It should also be noted that a reduction in the functional layers, such as the sealing layer, can also alter the parameter window of the materials, and this must be considered when setting the processing parameters.

Bioplastics

Bioplastics are plastic materials produced from renewable biomass sources, such as plant fats and oils, corn starch, straw, woodchips, recycled food waste, etc. Some bioplastics are obtained by processing directly from natural biopolymers including polysaccharides (e.g., starch, cellulose, chitosan and alginate) proteins (e.g., soy protein, gluten and gelatin), while others are chemically synthesized from sugar derivatives (e.g., lactic acid) and lipids (oils and fats) from either plants or animals, or biologically generated by fermentation of sugars or lipids.
