Thai Alcoholic Beverages in a Transition Era: Innovation and Growth in the Global Market

Thailand's alcoholic beverage market remains a key contributor to the national economy, with an estimated value of THB 320 billion during 2025–2027. Despite long-standing alcohol control measures, the industry continues to benefit from the recovery of tourism, the revival of social activities, and growing consumer demand for premium experiences, quality products, and diversified beverage choices, including RTDs, craft beer, and wine.
While per capita alcohol consumption has declined over the past decade, the number of active drinkers—particularly among the 20–44 age group—remains significant. This indicates a structural shift from volume-driven growth toward value creation, where premium products, brand experience, and product differentiation play increasingly important roles.
Government policies are also evolving to balance public health objectives with economic growth by easing sales-hour restrictions and supporting the tourism and hospitality sectors, while maintaining responsible drinking measures and regulatory oversight.
Globally, the industry is experiencing rapid transformation through premiumization, low- and no-alcohol beverages, craft products, innovative flavours, and sustainable packaging aligned with ESG goals. India's fast-growing alcoholic beverage market provides a compelling case study, demonstrating how rising incomes, a young population, and premium consumption can fuel market expansion despite regulatory complexities.
For Thai businesses, future competitiveness will depend on developing premium products, leveraging local ingredients, investing in packaging innovation, and embracing sustainability. Success will increasingly be defined not by consumption volume, but by the ability to create value, build distinctive brands, and respond effectively to evolving consumer expectations and regulatory landscapes.
