Green Productivity: Strengthening Thailand’s Food Industry for Global Competitiveness

Rising production costs and green trade barriers are pushing Thailand’s food industry to improve productivity by minimizing losses, using resources efficiently, and achieving measurable results.
Mr. Surachet Polwanich, Director, and Mr. Wuttipong Boonnaiva, Director of Consulting Services at the Thailand Productivity Institute (FTPI), emphasize that productivity improvement requires effective management, appropriate technology, and workforce development. FTPI supports industry through training, consultancy, and initiatives such as the SMART Industry Project, which promotes the application of Thailand Quality Award (TQA) criteria for systematic organizational improvement.
Green Productivity focuses on preventing losses at the source. Material Flow Cost Accounting (MFCA) helps manufacturers identify hidden costs associated with material losses, including labor, energy, and waste management, enabling more targeted improvements.
Before investing in new machinery, manufacturers should analyze existing processes and address inefficiencies. Technologies such as IoT and AI enable real-time monitoring, Vision Systems detect defects, and Predictive Maintenance helps reduce unexpected downtime. The best technology is not necessarily the most sophisticated; it is the one that solves real problems and delivers measurable results.
For SMEs, competitiveness depends not only on production volume but also on innovation, distinctive products, and opportunities in niche markets. Developing employees, particularly frontline supervisors and operators, is equally important in building a culture of continuous loss prevention and reduction.
Ultimately, global competitiveness requires productivity, sustainability, and ESG to advance together. By improving resource efficiency and managing carbon emissions systematically, Thailand’s food industry can strengthen its resilience and long-term competitiveness.
